Year 2001 Childrens Turtle Poster Contest
Of the worlds over 270 turtle species, over half are either threatened or endangered. This contest was created to help educate both children and adults about the plight of turtles. Past contests have received over 1,000 entries from all 50 states as well as Canada and Mexico.
According to Lorri Cramer, the contests creator and organizer, The poster should focus on one particular species and why it is threatened. Some examples might include, but are not limited to, excessive hunting for food and pets, pollution, roadkills, loss of habitat, and boat hits.
Posters should be submitted on a heavy-weight poster board and can measure either 12" x 18" or 18" x 24". Entries will be grouped according to age and grade level. Mediums suggested are paint, magic marker, inks, or collage. Name, address, phone number, age, grade, and name of school should be clearly printed on the back of the poster.

A panel of conservationists, artists, and teachers will judge the entries on content, originality, and artistic merit. Prizes will include official New York Turtle and Tortoise Society T-shirts, books, and a one-year membership to the Society.
All entries must be postmarked by May 15, 2001.
Winning posters will be exhibited at the 27th Annual Turtle and Tortoise Show in New York City in June 2001. All posters will become the property of The New York Turtle and Tortoise Society.
For specific information about turtles for children, Ms. Cramer recommends the book Turtles, by Anita Baskin-Salzberg and Allen Salzberg. The 64-page book includes numerous charts and color photos of turtles and tortoises. The books Web site includes a sample chapter on sea turtles as well as ordering information.
