Threats to Turtles: Hunting and Trade

Every day thousands of Vietnam’s turtles are taken from their homes and sold to traders.  For these unlucky turtles, it is a sad end to a long life.

Why are turtles hunted and sold?

Food
In the past, turtles were eaten by local people when they were found.  People rarely took more than their family needed. However, today people collect as many turtles as they can find to sell.  Some of them end up in restaurants in Vietnam . . .

. . . but most are sent across the border to
China where they are eaten or used as medicine.
